Mukhtaran Mai vows to continue her mission
Gang rape survivor Mukhtaran Mai, who had to wait five years for the Supreme Court’s verdict in her case, has lost faith in the justice system.
Women protection a low priority in Pata
DESPITE the passage of over four years, the law commonly known as Women Protection Act (WPA) is yet to be extended to the Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (Pata) due to which the Offence of Zina (Enforcement of Hudood) Ordinance, 1979, is applicable in these areas in its original form.
Mai will appeal against SC decision
MEERWALA: Rape victim Mukhtaran Mai said on Sunday that she would challenge the Supreme Court decision to dismiss her appeal against the early release of five men convicted of abusing her.
Will Mukhtaran Mai ever get justice?
It is tempting, when hearing that five of the six men accused of raping Mukhtaran Mai have had their acquittals upheld by the Supreme Court, to see the verdict as the latest in a long line of indignities forced upon her. Mukhtaran Mai has endured government scorn and apathy with grace and has been an inspiration to millions. If anyone deserved justice, it is her.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

This project aims at creating awareness among masses about issues faced by women especially violence, doing lobbying with the policy makers for bringing about women friendly changes to the policies, creating support structures for women victims of violence, and institutionalizing these structures.

Bedari has created networks of volunteers in all the four sub-districts of Chakwal. These volunteers are provided training in addressing issues of violence against women and working together as a CBO. Bedari also arranged training on leadership and management of a CBO for these volunteers.

Furthermore, Bedari has provided trainings to groups of media persons on reporting cases of violence against women, to lawyers and policemen on handling cases of violence against women sensitively, and to members of local government bodies (councilors) on the same issues.

Bedari has actively remained engaged in running campaigns to raise awareness on various women rights issues under this project. It has held seminars on domestic violence, sexual harassment and general violence issues. It has conducted radio programs on the same issues to reach out to maximum number of people. It has published a quarterly newsletter to disseminate information to our network members as well as general public about this project. The news letter is being published and disseminated regularly since 2008.

Last but not the least, Bedari is providing direct support to women victims of violence. It has received 174 cases of violence against women from all the four sub-districts of Chakwal. These cases have been referred by the volunteers who received training from Bedari on handling cases of violence against women. The number of cases solved by these volunteers on their own is quite high.

A very important component of this project is establishing a resource center for people and organizations working to end violence against women. This website is meant to achieve this very objective.
